It has been a hundred years since the introduction of Hats, Felt, and Gurkha, which has become synonymous with the Gurkha soldier’s attire. The hat was worn by Gurkha units on the frontiers of India and in all the operational theatres during both World Wars. Today, it is worn by Gurkha units of the British and Indian Armies, the Nepalese Army, and Gurkha police and security units worldwide. In the British Army, it is no longer worn in the field and is primarily used for parades and ceremonial duties. The origins of Hats, Felt, and Gurkha date back to the beginning of the 20th Century when a substitute form of headwear was being actively sought to replace the Kilmarnock Hat for field service wear. The Kilmarnock had very little to commend it when worn in the field as it neither gave protection from the burning sun nor the heavy monsoon rain. Over the years, a number of modifications were made to it both by the authorities and individual battalions.

The Gurkha Recruit Hat, meticulously crafted in Kathmandu, Nepal, showcases a blend of 80% wool and 20% felts. Its authenticity is marked by the regimental cap badge, while soldiers on duty and in parade proudly sport this hat, secured with a leather chin strap and buckle closure. Distinguished by assorted regimentals’ badges, it signifies the unique identity of soldiers and officers from varying regiments. Size: 55-56 cm.
